Auction: The FIRST copy of the first Tales of MU book.

I was thinking about doing this on eBay, but I've never used eBay before and it seems like it's best to start with something small there and I have a feeling this could get big.

As I've said before, I'm going to be redoing the print editions of Tales of MU to make them better quality books, give them better edited text, and make them better value to buy (i.e., more story for your dollar). The plain cover editions will be going away as I gain replacements for them. Some people have asked if there will be warning before they go away; I guess they want to make sure they get a copy of the old ones for completeness' sake or speculative value or whatever. Yes, there will be plenty of warning. I'll announce when I've begun compilation, and when the first volume is finished I'll announce that and then have a time frame before I pull the old one off the market.

In the meantime, though, I have a bit of a potential collector's item or keepsake I've been saving for a rainy day. I had been saving it for a rainy day, but as I said in the aftermath of my last fundraiser you've got to make hay while the sun shines. By the time it's raining, I might not have the time or leeway I need to do anything with this.

And also, I'm not good at keeping objects in good condition. This one's been packed away in the box it came in since I got it, but I live in a land of confusion house full of cats. Accidents happen. Things occur. Events eventuate. So I want to get this out of my hands and into the hands of someone who will cherish and appreciate it.

So...

I am selling the first copy of the first book of Tales of MU to the person who makes the highest bid for it before midnight Central Standard Time on Saturday, March 19th. (That is, your post must be no later than 11:59 the night of Friday the 18th.) This book has never been read and only briefly been handled. I ordered it as a proofing/sample copy when I was still getting set up on Lulu for the first time. It contains some "rare" features: in the first chapter, there's a reference to phone numbers that was edited out once I established magic mirrors as a substitute for phones. This book also bears a unique ISBN number, as when I first started out I was planning on using one of Lulu's services for getting my books sold through Amazon and other retailers that involved having an ISBN number and no control over the price.

I decided the price wasn't worth it, and so no other copy of the book... no other printed and bound volume in existence... bears this number. It is unique, and it identifies this as the first copy.

I will sign the book on the inside front cover for the winner, if desired. I can make it out to a particular person or just sign it, but longer dedications are not possible due to the physical limitations of my hands.

To bid: Click the "reply" link for the most recent bid in the bidding thread and state the amount of your bid. I'll start the thread immediately after posting this. Clicking the "reply" link on the last bid (not "post a comment" is important. It doesn't just make sure your bid is in the right place. It also notifies the person you've outbid.

Don't send money when you make your bid; only if you're the winner. Questions/comments about the book or the auction process can be left as comments on this post, but please stay out of the bidding thread if you're not bidding. In the event that the bidding thread gets too long to be manageable, I may start a second thread and freeze the first one.

More Details:

This is book 1, "Welcome Weekend", containing the first 22 chapters only.

It should be assumed to be identical to the copy currently available from my Lulu store except where noted.
